65. Advantages of the Older Man: Gwyneth Lewis

If there is one thing I like more than post, it’s unexpected parcel post and even better than that are unexpected parcels of books which is what happened to me a few days ago when I received Advantages of the Older Man from Sarah at Seren Press.

When reading this light-hearted story you need to make sure your disbelief is well and truly suspended! In a nutshell, miserable lovesick Jennie, living back home with her parents in Swansea, becomes haunted by the ghost of Dylan Thomas who promises to help her win the affections of poet Peter in return for her support going through what you might call a ‘mid-death’ crisis.

There’s not a lot to this novella, it’s short and sweet but perhaps a little too silly. As a Swansea girl I liked the hometown setting, there are a few comic moments involving the dead Thomas and it’s a quick, easy read.
